"Could not obtain write permission for the installation directory"error with 1-Minute WP Launcher

Solution

If you try to upload a plugin or theme via 1-Minute WP Launcher and you get the error "Could not obtain write permission for the installation directory: {directory path goes here}", then you need to change the "permissions" of the plugins and themes folders.

Here's how to change the permissions of the directories on your server, via cPanel or via Filezilla:

IN CPANEL:

1. Open File Manager. Select your site from the "Open document root for" drop-down menu and click Go.

2. Double click the "wp-content" folder to open it.

3. Right-click the "plugins" folder and select "Change permissions" from the drop-down menu.

4. Change permissions to 755 as on this screenshot and click Change Permissions:

5. If the permissions are 755 already or the previous change doesn't help, try 777 permissions as on this screenshot:

6. Repeat for the "themes" folder in order to upload themes with 1-Minute WP Launcher.

Note that cPanel file manager doesn't allow changing permissions of all subfolders and their contained files. If you cannot update a plugin or theme with 1-Minute WP Launcher due to limited file permissions, delete the plugin or theme and reinstall it with 1-Minute WP Launcher or use FTP to apply permissions recursively (see below).

IN FILEZILLA (OR OTHER DESKTOP FTP PROGRAM):

1. Connect to your host and find your site installation directory (usually public_html but could vary if the site is installed on an addon domain, subdomain or in a subdirectory).

2. Double-click the "wp-content" folder to open it.

3. Right-click the "plugins" folder and select "File permissions..." from the drop-down menu.

4. Change permissions to 755 as on this screenshot and click OK:

5. If the permissions are 755 already or the previous change doesn't help, try 777 permissions as on this screenshot:

6. Repeat the same for the "themes" folder in order to upload themes with 1-Minute WP Launcher.

7. With FileZilla you can also apply the permissions to the contained subfolders and files. Though it will take some time, you might want to do that in order to allow updating existing plugins or themes with 1-Minute WP Launcher.

To apply the permissions to contained subfolders and files, check the "Recurse into subdirectories" checkbox and ensure "Apply to all files and subdirectories" option is selected.

You can also ask your host to help you with this.
