Search help:

I see an FTP login screen when trying to upgrade my site to Empire version with WP Empire Builder

Solution

Sometimes, you may try to click the blue button that says "Upgrade Site to Empire Version" and get the following error:

"Sorry, an attempt to upgrade your blog to Empire version failed due to a critical error. Please contact the plug-in support with the error info. Cannot modify wp-config.php."

This can happen on some servers. What needs to be done is to "unlock the write permissions."

Here's how to do it:

In cPanel:

1. Open File Manager. Select your site from the "Open document root for" dropdown menu and click "Go."

2. If you are getting an FTP login screen: Locate the file wp-config.php in the folder opened, right-click it and select Change Permissions. Set all checkboxes in the Write row and click Change Permissions.

3. If you are getting  'Cannot modify .htaccess': Locate the filein the folder opened, right-click it and select Change Permissions. Set all checkboxes in the Write row and click Change Permissions.

4. If you are getting 'Cannot create blogs.dir' or 'Cannot create sunrise.php': right click 'wp-content' folder and select Change Permissions. Set all checkboxes in the Write row and click Change Permissions.

5. If you are getting 'Cannot modify sunrise.php': double click 'wp-content' folder, right-click sunrise.php in it and select Change Permissions. Set all checkboxes in the Write row and click Change Permissions.

6. Try upgrading your site once again. If error is shown for another file or folder, follow corresponding instruction above.

In Filezilla:

1. Connect to your host and find your site installation directory (usually public_html but could vary if the site is installed on an addon domain, subdomain or in a subdirectory)

2. If you are getting an FTP login screen: Locate the file wp-config.php in the folder opened, right-click it and select File Permissions. Set all checkboxes in the Write row and click Change Permissions.

3. If you are getting  'Cannot modify .htaccess': Locate the filein the folder opened, right-click it and select File Permissions. Set all checkboxes in the Write row and click Change Permissions.

2. If getting 'Cannot modify wp-config.php' or 'Cannot modify .htaccess' error: locate the file in the root folder of your Wordpress installation, right-click it and select File Permissions. Set all Write checkboxes and click OK.

4. If getting 'Cannot create blogs.dir' or 'Cannot create sunrise.php': right click 'wp-content' folder and select File Permissions. Set all Write checkboxes and click OK.

5. If getting 'Cannot modify sunrise.php': double click 'wp-content' folder, right-click sunrise.php in it and select File Permissions. Set all Write checkboxes and click OK.

6. Try upgrading your blog once again. If error is shown for another file or folder, follow corresponding instruction above.

If this work-around doesn't work, please contact your host about it and tell them to make the permissions writeable.
